Alexei Popyrin receives wildcard into French Open

Rising Australian star Alexei Popyrin has been awarded a wildcard into the French Open. 

The 19-year-old will be making his French Open main draw debut later this month. 

Popyrin enjoyed success on the clay courts of Roland Garros during his junior days as he won the 2017 French Open boys' singles title. 

The Australian has now received back-to-back wildcards for the first two Grand Slams of the season. 

Popyrin, enjoying his career-high ranking of No. 109 in the world, will be motivated to also put on a good campaign at the French Open. 

The 19-year-old impressed at this year's Australian Open, having reached the third round before being edged out in a five-setter by eventual semi-finalist Lucas Pouille. 

"I'm so excited to have the chance to play the French Open and thank Tennis Australia for the opportunity," Popyrin said, per Tennis Australia. 

"I've had an incredible start to the year, beginning with the Australian Open, and I can't wait for another chance to prove myself at Grand Slam level. I'll do my very best and look forward to giving it my all."
