Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro and Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas have exited the Rome Masters doubles event after been edged out in a tough opener.
Del Potro and Cuevas blew a match point as Karen Khachanov and Marc Lopez claimed a 3-6 7-6 (3) 13-11.
Del Potro earned the first break of the match in the eighth game before they served out for the first set in the following game.
Khachanov and Lopez recovered from a break down in the second set to force tie-break, where they won five points in a row to win it by a 7-3 score.
Del Potro and Cuevas had more chances as they led 9-8 in the match tie-break but Khachanov and Lopez saved the match point before converting their third match point to seal.a win.
Interestingly, Khachanov and Lopez won a total of 73 points and lost 82 but still ended on the winning side in just less than two hours of play.
Meanwhile, Austria's Dominic Thiem and Jurgen Melzer have made the Rome doubles round-of-16.
The Austrians edged out Italy's Filippo Baldi and Andrea Pellegrino 6-3 3-6 10-7.
Each pair got broken twice at the beginning of the match but Thiem and Melzer managed to keep their serve after claiming their third break in the eighth game.
However, the Italians kept their focus as they broke the Austrians in the eighth game to take a 5-3 second-set lead before they served out to force a decider.
The turning point of the match was when Thiem and Melzer won six points in a row to take a 7-2 match tie-break lead as Baldi and Pellegrino never recovered from that.
The Austrians won 80 percent of their first serve points, converted 3-of-6 of their break point chances and saved 2-of-5 of Baldi and Pellegrino's break point opportunities in an hour and 13 minutes of action .
They play next against top-seeded Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo.
