Novak Djokovic: 'Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal made me work harder'

Novak Djokovic spoke about how Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer pushed him to improve. The Serb said: "Both of them, maybe two out of four best players ever to play this game. So to be able to compete with them, it is something special. But I know as somebody, when I was starting to play professional tennis tournaments, got to No.3 of the world, I know how much struggle I had to go through mentally. Obviously with confidence and self‑belief, after I lost many of the important matches against those guys. But they made me also work harder."

Djokovic also explained why Nadal often deals with injuries: "He has a very physical game. He slides a lot and spends a lot of energy on each shot. His joints, his body suffers a lot, and it's not easy. He's been playing this particular style of the game for over ten years on the highest level."

Nadal praised Federer's skills on dirt: "He's a fantastic player, clay‑court player. A player who was able to play 2006, 2007, 2008, finals, then winning 2009, and then playing the final again in 2011. The semi-finals in 2005. I don't see a lot of players that have been in all that final rounds of French Open in a row, so that says that Roger is one of the best clay‑court players of the history."
