The Women's Tennis Association (WTA Tour) has announced that no WTA events will be held till May 2 due to the COVID-19 outbreak in a statement issued on Monday.
A WTA spokesperson commented, "Due to the ongoing global coronavirus outbreak, the WTA tournaments in Stuttgart, Istanbul and Prague will not be held as scheduled. We regret this is the case for all of our loyal fans, players, sponsors and all those who support women’s professional tennis. At this point in time, the WTA Tour is now suspended until May 2. We will make a decision in the week ahead regarding the remaining WTA European clay court events and will continue to monitor this situation closely and its impact on the 2020 WTA Tour season."
The WTA Tour had come under some criticism from several fronts as the tour had not made an overall statement on its events unlike the men's ATP Tour which has said that all tournaments till April 27th were suspended.
With the latest statement, tournaments in Stuttgart, Istanbul and Prague have also been officially canceled. The next scheduled event for the WTA Tour is the Madrid Open in Spain on May 4, followed by the Italian Open on May 11, events in Strasbourg and Rabat on May 18 and the French Open Grand Slam on May 25th in Paris.
While there has been no official comment on events beyond 2 May, with the current situation in Italy, Spain, and France, it seems likely that more events will be canceled.
